⇒ new os, challenges met

after much blood, sweat and (mostly) tears, I rose to the hardware challenge:
1. open Apple laptop
2. remove internal hard drive
3. install new internal hard drive
4. reseal laptop
5. install new RAM
6. install new OS
7. restore all settings and preferences

It was a long night! Installing the OS, waiting, hoping...praying. In the end, everything went right from the get-go.
Vuze | Coda | Handbrake 0.9.2 | DivX | Xvid | Perian | El iPodo | MozoDojo | MacOSaiX | TextWrangler | VLC 0.8.6i | Diablo II patch

Today, ran pretty well. I'm beginning to figure out my running speed (optimal balance of air intake vs. expenditure). It's roughly 10.5km/h. Made 2.0km in 12' again! Before that, I did 1.6km in 9'33" which is better, but not great. Went on to run 2.9km in 20' and use about 200KCALs.

No gym girl + grandparents visiting + sushi at home = short gym sess. Did bench 50 x 16 just for the heck of it.

⇒ what in the world

Exitreality launched--a 3d web browser. I've not yet tried it, but sounds shit--I mean, if you have to 'walk' everywhere to get to a webpage, it's going to slow down the surfing experience.
'ATM for books'. If there's one in Sydney, I'mma find it and try it.

games' 'hard' mode: hard | canon eos 5D spec | more Canon action | world's smallest pc | making of MGS4 | sweet sf home sticks...btw, sf4 = teh disappointment | broken vinyl + train = awesome | MAC OS X 10.5 released | crazy computing power from Cray | LittleBigPlanet design jam | FFXI boss bitch-slapped | Gunpei Yokoi papercraft | popular now on teh internetz: 'demakes'. Basically, you take a current game IP, and imagine what it would have been like on a retro system. | 10 commandments of facebook (according to cracked.com)

saw Hellboy 2 tonite. M'yeh, alot of things I liked and yet something lacking, maybe the pacing wasn't tight enough. I also thought Doug Jones did a poor job in comparison to David Hyde Pierce. Sorry Doug. The fantasy was great, the costumes, art direction, production design and style: all great. Nuada = slippery, but cool. Nuala = schwing. Wink = cool. Stock agent characters getting eaten = nasty but alrite. Creepy cat-devouring lady? Disturbing-cool. Not so great: noob Johann--the guy in the suit didn't body-communicate particularly well. Same goes for the voice. Not much about the character was likeable or interesting.

I'm preparing myself for the great yoghurt-dessert invasion of sydney: we all know it's overdue. America's had it for a while now, and it's turned over megabucks. It's just another one of those stylised-franchisee-chains that periodically crop up with some diet staple presented in a new way.

btw, movie prices (like fuel) have gone up and will never come down. To hell with this, greedy cinema peddlers can suck on my hairy left one, I got a HDTV now. I'm never going back to cine. What a ripoff!

useful speed boost in FireFox (use at your own risk):
"Firefox is in my opinion the best browser ever made until now. It includes:

-improved tabbed browsing
-pop up blocking
-integrated Goggle search
-enhanced privacy controls
-built-in phishing protection
-online spell checking
-lots of themes, interfaces, and extensions/addons
Mozilla Firefox officially supports:
-Microsoft Windows
-Linux
-Mac OS X
Unofficial Support:
-Free BSD
-OS/2
-Solaris
-SkyOS
-BeOS
-XP Professional x64 Edition

Here are some Tips&Tricks that can help you double the speed of Firefox.
1. Type about:config in the address bar and then press Enter.

2. In the filter search bar type network.http.pipelining. Be sure the value field is set true,if not double-click to set true.
HTTP is the application-layer protocol that most web pages are transferred with. In
HTTP 1.1, multiple requests can be sent before any responses are received. This is known as pipelining. Pipelining reduces page loading times, but not all servers support it.

3. Go back to the filter search bar and type network.http.pipelining.maxrequests.
Double-click this option and set its value to 8.

4. In the filter search bar and type network.http.proxy.pipelining. Once opened doubleclick on it and set it to true.

5. In IPv6-capable DNS servers, an IPv4 address may be returned when an IPv6 address
is requested. It is possible for Mozilla to recover from this misinformation, but a
significant delay is introduced.
Type network.dns.disableIPv6 in the filter search bar and set this option to true by
double clicking on it.

6. CONTENT INTERRUPT PARSING
This preference controls if the application will interrupt parsing a page to respond to UI events. It does not exist by default.
Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New
and then Boolean from the pop-up menu. Then:
A. Enter content.interrupt.parsing in the New boolean value pop-up window and click
OK
B. When prompted to choose the value for the new boolean, select true and click OK.

7. Rather than wait until a page has completely downloaded to display it to the user,
Mozilla applications will regularly render what has been received to that point. This
option controls the maximum amount of time the application will be unresponsive while
rendering pages.
Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New
and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.max.tokenizing.time in the New integer value pop-up window and
click OK
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 2250000 and click OK.

8. CONTENT NOTIFY INTERVAL
This option sets the minimum amount of time to wait between reflows. Right-click
(Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window, select New and then
Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Type content.notify.interval in the New integer value pop-up window and click OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.

9. CONTENT NOTIFY ONTIMER
A. This option sets if to reflow pages at an interval any higher than that specified by content.notify.interval. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the
about:config window and select New and then Boolean from the pop-up menu.
B. Type content.notify.ontimer in the New boolean value pop-up window and click OK.
C. You will be prompted to choose the value for the new boolean. Select true and click OK.

10. Notify Backoffcount
This option controls the maximum number of times the content will do timer-based
reflows. After this number has been reached, the page will only reflow once it is finished downloading. Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window
and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.notify.backoffcount in the New integer value pop-up window and click
OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 5 and click OK.

11. CONTENT SWITCH THRESHOLD
You can interact with a loading page when content.interrupt.parsing is set to true.
When a page is loading, the application has two modes: a high frequency interrupt mode and a low frequency interrupt mode. The first one interrupts the parser more frequently to allow for greater UI responsiveness during page load.
The low frequency interrupt mode interrupts the parser less frequently to allow for
quicker page load. The application enters high frequency interrupt mode when you move
the mouse or type on the keyboard and switch back to low frequency mode when you had
no activity for a certain amount of time. This preference controls that amount of time.
Right-click (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select
New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter content.switch.threshold in the New integer value pop-up window and click
OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 750000 and click OK.

12. NGLAYOUT INITIALPAINT DELAY
Mozilla applications render web pages incrementally, they display what’s been received of a page before the entire page has been downloaded. Since the start of a web page normally doesn’t have much useful information to display, Mozilla applications will wait a short interval before first rendering a page. This preference controls that interval. Rightclick (Apple users ctrl-click) anywhere in the about:config window and select New and then Integer from the pop-up menu.
A. Enter nglayout.initialpaint.delay in the New integer value pop-up window and click
OK.
B. You will be prompted to enter a value. Enter 0 and click OK."

NB: I didn't come up with this solution, I'm merely passing it on. Posted by some hero named 'taranga' from Norway on some forum.

⇒ i surrender!

recently binged and purged my disgusting, vile, selfish consumerist urge...by buying up everything I've 'even sort of' wanted since the dawn of uni (my uni time, not Uni itself!). Let's see, in pretty much chronological order, I picked up:
converse double upper, black/milk lo cut
converse double tongue, white/olive lo cut
sneaker freaker collected paperback
another sneaker book I've forgotten the title to
lone wolf and cub vol. 12, 23, 27 and 28 (completing the set!)

JAG t-shirt
god of war (PS2) twenny-bux!
god of war 2 special edition (PS2)
guitar hero 1 (i got 2 ages ago) on the cheep!
GTA: San Andreas twenny-bux!
Foster's home for invisble friends dvd set volume 1
Harvey Birdman attorney at law vol. 1
Hulk 2-disc special edition (was $9.95 Bargain!)
coming to america special edition 2-disc eddie! ed-die!
zatoichi the blind swordsman dvd jap-tap-climax!
batman haunted knight
batman dark victory
justice volume 2 (it's alex ross man!)
path of the assassin volume 1
shadow of the colossus (PS2) brand new collector's edition in transit
ico (PS2) brand new
we ♥ katamari (PS2)
resident evil 2 (GCN)
resident evil 3 (GCN)
resident evil code veronica x (GCN)
hungry jack's whopper meal
need for speed most wanted twenny-bux!
prince of persia trilogy box
okami!

I think that's pretty much it. Had I remembered/come across it at the time, I would have also gotten:
converse double upper, parchment/navy lo cut
samurai executioner vol.1
the dark knight strikes again (for completion)
spider-man: reign
metroid prime 2
rez
metal gear solid 3: subsistance
toy story
toy story 2
wallace and gromit curse of the were-rabbit
Aqua di Gio aftershave (smells purdy)
plenty of other stuff to pick-up down the line...this should hold me for now.

feck you eBay! just when I think I'm out, they pull me back!

on the issue of collectivism, obsession and materialism, 'yes'. I'm told the life I currently live is poor (it's not rich but we do ok) so having stuff makes me feel better about being borderline welfare while other prix mooch off their custom-schooner-toting parents. Lay off. We were robbed by the war.

⇒ a hard week at work...

terrible, terrible week at work. Mostly because of impossible deadlines I'm supposed to work to. If you're gonna throw me work at the last minute, then I'm gonna give it to you late. Thems the breaks. I mean, I'm not slacking off at work; if anything, I'm working harder than ever, but everything I do takes a certain amount of time, and if I don't have that time then:
1. my work suffers
2. i won't be happy. you won't be happy. nobody will be happy.

And another thing: stop distracting me with your incessant banter, I thought this was a professional workplace, not a mess hall. And stop heaping work on me when I've already got something else to do. It's impossible to complete things on time when you keep throwing me more and more work, especially at the last minute.

enough work rant for today...

i don't wanna be hard on microsh!t, but they do bring it on themselves...have they ever had an original idea? jeebus! this is disgusting...OR maybe they were the first to come up with the concept of copying everybody else! An original thought by Microsh!t! Huzzah!

⇒ tetris my world!

(break: w11d3-->days on break: 80)

Australia day this year was extra patriotic. I think it may have been the recent 'un-Australian' remarks made by a certain Muslim cleric or the even more recent banning of flag from big day out. Personally, I slept through it because I stayed up watching the Descent, which rocked my world. It's really pretty awesome the first time through. And reading an analysis opened up another plausible interpretation of the film. I highly recommend it. Still enjoyable on repeat viewings but nowhere near as good as the first time in pitch dark, absolute isolation and no ambient noise.

Federer vs. Gonazales tonite. Difficult to call. Federer has won all their previous encounters but Gonzales has never played like this. I'm still betting on Federer tho, just how close the victory margin will be is unclear.

(break: w9d4-->days on break: 67)

Apple Science: Inside the Image | Penny Arcade take the Zune down (another) notch. I love those guys. |

Zombies! I salute thee! I'm down with most-things zombie. I eagerly await | Supercomputer | IBM POWER | Hybrid Kernel | Embarrassingly parallel |

Australian Open started today (hell yeah!). Here's a pic of young Federer (ha-ha!)

read the article. Interesting, Federer first clashed with Hewitt at 15 and had a big losing streak before his ascension |

Galatea: the statue brought to life by the gods in the Pygmalion myth

Wheels on Meals (1984). I love this movie. Sammo's double sword action kills Attack of the clones, while JC shows off his fighting and acrobatic talents again. The movie's also frickin hilarious with cameos/support from Lola Forner (Miss Spain '79), Richard Ng, John Shum, Benny 'the jet' Urquidez and Keith Vitali. The final battle goes right up there with Project A, Dragons Forever, Young Master, Drunken Master, Armor of God and City Hunter. JC back in his prime was King of the mountain. When you ignore the silliness/comedic elements of his work, you realize he kicked serious ass! The scene in the middle of Legend of Drunken Master, add that to the list.

to cap off this post, here's a pic of my lone wolf collection, all in near-mint condition (and that's the way I likes them!)
