⇒ Daigo speaks

-What was your most memorable tournament?

There are 3. One is EVO 2003,SFIII final. I lost against a Japanese player, KO, though. The other one is the first trip ever I made to US and overseas tournament, where I fought against Alex Valle. The last one is official Capcom vs. SNK 2 tournament in Japan.
source: capcom unity

notes: EVO 2003 featured his semi-final comeback against Justin Wong--you know the one. He lost the final (like he said) to KO's Yun.
Battle against Alex Valle was for SFAIII World championships--about 10 years ago. Alex Valle used V-ism Ryu(?) while Daigo used Akuma(?)

⇒ more random things i should've posted months ago

wot i been up to lately:
1. jogging one or two laps of wentworth park
2. laser tag
3. moving back home =S

three franchises which went somewhere i didn't like:
1. star wars
2. metal gear solid
3. street fighter
i don't give a crap about any of these anymore. I gave them a chance when they did something new but overall, they took my generosity for granted. They lost me at Episode 2, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Street Fighter IV respectively (and coincidentally the 4th major releases).

⇒ SSFIV: my thoughts

the focus-attack-cancel-dash system is the strong part, but the the implementation/execution of the actual 'focus attack' itself is in my opinion, flawed; inferior to 3rd strike's parrying system, too.
I'd say the SSFIV's fighting engine as a whole is close to SSF2T and SF alpha 2's alpha counter

Focus-system Pros:

  • easy to execute (just MP + MK when not getting thrashed)

  • EX-cancel leads to alot of possibilities

  • about abstractly controlling the 'space', like SF2 series

  • juggling & target combos from SF3 series

Cons:

  • slow to execute (3rd strike's parrying is a simple tap towards or down)

  • no air countering (?) -- very poor indeed. This translates into jump in the air and immediately get killed by opponent. What is the countermeasure for when airborne? I can't see it anywhere in-game

  • small 'dash' -- why is the dashing in this game so inefficient? It takes about 5 dashes just to cross the screen!

  • extreme fireball vulnerability -- 3S' parrying nullified fireballs completely, SSFIV makes spamming fireballs effective again

  • somewhat defeated by quick jabs -- jab to activate opponent's counter attack then jab again to interrupt all but fully charged focus attack, and even then you'll see it coming miles away

  • no rock-paper-scissors; in 3S it was strike-parry-grapple, what is it in SSFIV?

  • Focus attack closer in resemblance to alpha-counter. Also, why does it crumple the other guy? Parrying leaves the other guy wide open without effectively 'freezing' them, making for more fluid and exciting matches. If you successfully parry, it doesn't guarantee damage to the opponent.

  • can you successfully use Focus attack/counter with zero health? Watch the Daigo vid again (embedded below) and tell me, could something this exciting and insane happen under SSFIV's Focus-attack system? I think you get KO'd if you try to focus attack with zero health...

  • What is the distinction between a Super Combo and an Ultra Combo? Amount of damage? Why even have both in the game, now you've got regular moves, command moves, special moves, EX special moves, Super combos and Ultra Combos? Not enough distinction between them. Don't call it 'strategic' because the EX-bar has only one use, I mean, what else are you going to save the EX bar for? Having both in the game, you could pull off a Special, then Super immediately followed by an Ultra, whereas in 3S you had to plan ahead and maybe you'll have enough meter to get you an EX attack followed by a Super Art. Additionally, the input for Ultra combos (typically involves PPP or KKK input) feels so ham-fisted.

other cons:

  • no beautiful 2D frame-by-frame animation (in-game)

  • comical tone; 3S was about kicking ass and breaking faces

  • unenthusiastic vocal performances -- compare soundbytes (same goes for Tatsunoko vs. Capcom). Same with the music--not memorable or on par with SF2, 3S, Alpha 2 or even MvC2.

  • weak storyline animation -- 3rd Strike had moving art; IV feels so cheap

  • lacking originality -- the 3 series was all about reinvention via new characters and overhauled fight system (only Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li and Akuma are from other SF games, making for a 16:20 originality ratio) while SSFIV only has a 8:35 originality ratio (Gouken, Seth, Abel, Rufus, Viper, El Fuerte, Juri and Hakan), and Seth and Viper suck.

  • Seth = the suck. What a cheap basterd. 3S's Gill could be taken to town by mastery of the parrying system (even without, he's still quite beatable), while Seth is just a lazy 'has-every-character's-moves' character. Just cheap without redemption.

  • grading system only after vs human match. The grading system in 3S kept me coming back for more!

  • no 'bash the other guy for a bit after KO' -- how else am I supposed to rub salt into wounds; to enjoy sweet victory?

You would have called me a hypocrite for bagging the SFIV games without having thoroughly played before; I held out for 12+ months but now with all the buzz, I had to see for myself. I've played a fair amount and must say, for me, 3rd Strike's still the best. I'll give SSIV more time to reveal it's depth though. I can already see the EX-focus cancel is the door to crazy combos.

Why is everyone praising SSFIV so much? I appreciate that it revived fighting game interest but really feel this is a step backwards--the 3D just don't feel 'right' and the fight mechanics are closer to SF2 than 3S. I'm not saying remake 3S (just release it on PSN in Australia, pixellation and all) but I really feel the engine, though not broken, it ain't right. One thought I had was to implement a combo breaker of some type--an evolution of red-parrying, if you will. I know it sounds cheap but why not reward those good enough to execute it? Red-parrying isn't easy, either.

Note: if 3rd strike were on PSN (or my Dreamcast still worked -- RIP good buddy), I'd still be playing it and probably wouldn't have bought SSFIV. Yes, I think 3rd Strike is that good. Played it regularly from 2002-2006 and intermittently in other years. I got Guilty Gear and BlazBlue:Calamity Trigger-review forthcoming. 3rd Strike, my great white buffalo...

New Wolverine movie teaser out:
X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE HD

actually looks kinda watchable. I just hope it's not dogsh!t like X3. Still not crazy about: Will.i.am, Gambit, wirework, name of movie, small-ish looking final battle.
Why: If you're a successful musician, stay in that profession; looks nothing like the ladykillin' ragin' cajun we all ♥; I love wirework, but from what I've seen, it's not sharp enough to overcome the 'floaty' feel; why not just call it 'Wolverine'? The action (again from what little I've seen) seems smaller and less crazy than his X2 throw-down with Deathstrike.
like: Dog Logan goin' to War(s), Sabretooth's last line.
Huge Jackman looks bigger, beefer than and real-er than 'Incredible' Hulk!

⇒ relapse

sydney experiences a relapse into typical, shitty august winter weather. It's only a few days until we're in the thick of spring, and by god, it'd better be good.

over the weekend summary:
friday night: uneventful
saturday: games, walk around, Lowenbrau, dessert, pool. Lowenbrau: a bit expensive, but worth it if you're after 'giant pork schnitzel with herb mayonnaise and chips'. Wash it down with a litre of Lowenbrau original and make sure you sit inside--the atmosphere's better with the Bavarian cafe ambience and Oom-pa-pa band.
sunday: shitty weather relapse

more: streetfighter IV finally in sydney. Had a go as 'Crimson Viper'. hmm...i didn't get a really good feel for the character before some douche challenged me with 'Ken'. What an asshole. Of course I'm gonna suck with this character, I've only been playing 5 mins, I can barely figure out the play mechanic! Speaking of which, it may need to undergo revision or take some time to unlock the depths of the game, but I definetly think that it's a step back from third strike so far. Time's gonna tell, I guess.

⇒ more jones-y-ing

More things which hurt Indy 4: Expectations (about 18 years worth).
Here are some opinions I've come across which I wholly or partially agree with:
  • Lucas is some kind of cancer to his own creations - it was like the film took the occasional pause for Lucas to yank his pants down and take a steaming dump on everyone with obvious cute toy endorsements (CGI gophers, CGI monkeys, CGI ants, etc etc etc) and then Speilberg had to work overtime to catch up. Had some of the obvious compromise between Speilberg's "old" methods and Lucas' desire to CGI the whole thing up a zillion notches been left to simply just Speilberg's approach, it might have worked... but it just seems like Lucas is more interested in advertising merch and what graphics LucasFilm can do for your film
  • It did entertain and had some of the old Indy magic in places, which I think is 100% Steven and 0% George
  • LUCAS is a giant douchebag with awful ideas, in regards to story & character development.... His contributions to the advancement of film special effects are admirable enough, yet everything he's put his name on over the past 20 years has been unwatchabe garbage....
  • I agree - this was a LONG time to wait for a very mediocre movie. Lucas ruined the Star Wars franchise for the sake of impressing us with the CGI technology and it's happened again. The effects were good, but for the most part VERY improbable. With the boy being an instant expert on vine swinging (able to move faster than racing cars!) to immediately having monkeys fight with him, my son and I were laughing out loud by the time of the third waterfall.
  • He (Lucas) rapes his old movies for as much money he can get out of them. Re-releasing films with minor changes so that his fanboys will buy yet another set of Star Wars.
  • Indiana Jones just didn't live up to what it was supposed to have been, or even what it could have been. If this was the best that they could do, then I think that they need to quit while they're at it.
  • Basically the films not that good and although some effects are quite good but some are poor, B movie poor. I was disappointed I thought that this would be the best film of the year but, in my opinion it’s only a 5 / 10
  • "It's brilliant to blame Lucas for this. He spends a total of 2 weeks on this film." He can destroy an entire movie in a single afternoon if he makes executive level "creative decisions."
  • Its not awful; it is watchable.
  • Harrison Ford's performance was okay, but unfortunately he had an awful script to work with. It seems as if Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have lost the touch that made them great film makers. It's just a shame that like Star Wars, they had to go back and ruin an exellent series of films.
  • left me wondering who i was and where the hell i had been for the last 2 hours...LOL not really but I was wondering why the hell i just spent money on a film that had gained respect and , in so doing used that as a fan base and cash cow for this film, only to dissapoint and sell out to kids and teenyboppers with cooky ice age giggle factor tactics...ill stick with the first three, this one may take a while to digest.
  • whatever happened to Indy shooting a guy, or having a girl get caught in a basket, or whatever for comic relief? Again the movie-makers getting lazy.
  • swinging? Again, wondering what they CAN do and not thinking if they SHOULD do. CG or not, the idea was stupid
  • I think the Crystal Skull was a bad artifact? They should probably shoot for something more interesting. The entire movie I didn't care about this Crystal skull, and I never really understood exactly what the Commies would do with it anyway. They could have tried something more recognizable I think, Noahs Ark, the Bermuda Triangle, the tower of babel etc
  • they should have just kept to their original methods and the original Indy feel
  • Worst Indy movie ever.So freaking disappointing... I'm so mad that it SUCKED HARD CORE. I love Indiana Jones and Usually Lucas... but this is pushing it... he's begging for millions of angry hate letters and a Punch in the junk if he thinks he can get away with Star Wars 1 & 2 and then Indy 4
  • This was basically The Mummy...only worse, if you can image more overacting, forgotten plot points, Character accents going in and out... I was So hoping and thinking I was going to enjoy it... Pissed me off.
  • even given temple of doom's parachuting rubber raft, the waterfall sequence was just over the top. and the tarzan bit. and the monkey's. and the mutt/spalko sword fight (with a couple exceptions, the duels and chases in the previous 3 came off as though, with some luck and determination on the parts of those involved, they could actually take place in the "real world"; no so much in indy 4) and, yes, even the refrigerator.
  • the whole thing was just a bit flat

Additionally:
CG animals...bad...so bad...they were of such inferior quality in comparison to Jurassic Park, which came out 15 years ago!

Cate Blanchett, while talented, has yet to nail a 'character', in that she hasn't really made a villain vile or detestable enough for me happily see her get comeuppance. I simply didn't care anymore. She's more of an annoyance/slight hindrance than anything else.

Seriously, I think George Lucas is 20-30 years long-gone. The only reasons the new Star Wars films were bankable were because of Nostalgia, lightsabers, special effects+low attention spans, and marketing/merchandise.

for the record, I like Temple of Doom. The squirmish-ness (banquet anyone?) and squeamish-ness (bugs) were fun for me.

Now I'm gonna go watch that South Park episode parodying Raiders...clear up my frustration with Indy 4

One more thing:

wait, wha?

⇒ M. S. F.

the title? that's my overall 3rd strike grade today. That's right. Today, I may have fulfilled my 3rd strike destiny: M.S.F. grade! Wtf?!? I've only ever gotten it once before, and that was with system direction (I can't remember who I used for it, either, it was years ago). Today? No system direction, no cheats, just me, Q, the arcade stick and 11 8-star opponents (including Q).

Thrashed many, as their computer attack patterns have become familiar to me, and for 6 battles, received a minimum grade of SS+. True, this is not as high as the XS+++ I got yesterday, or the 5 consecutive-perfect-rounds from opponent 3-5, but nevertheless, my performance was outstanding. I avoided battling Hugo today, since yesterday he showed me Q's most exploitable flaw: low-throw priority. Yeah, that bastard showed it to me 4 times! Well, in my defense, today I obliterated Akuma, Ryu, Q, Urien and Gill.

Q reigns suprme! Total score: 6,26X,XX0. All right! A new record!

I didn't even lose a round!
That beats the old score by almost 2,000,000 points! Just remember, you need high average grade, no continues, about 3,000,000 points when you beat Gill to get a jackpot of bonus points. Using a super finish AND winning rounds perfect, and getting excellent and 20/20 on the bonus rounds also helps.

Other goals to accomplish in 3rd strike? The Dudley juggle, the Makoto dizzy combo, the Yun-Genei-Jin super juggle, the Necro corner elbow-juggle and the charge partitioning fun with Remy, Urien and Q.

Lastly, in the interest of mixing things up and keeping things fresh: I'd like to see Twelve, Oro, Hugo and Makoto in the top 5 scores, probably in that order...maybe Hugo with top grade: M.S.F. against Gill!

this doesn't mean I'm going to stop 3rd-striking!

...it's third strike yo, street fighter 3!

bruce lee gallery | wooden computing gear |

Bruce Lee's training regimen at 24 (unconfirmed):
The weight training program that Lee used during a stay in Hong Kong in 1965 at only 24 years old placed heavy emphasis on his arms.
-Bicep curls at a weight of 70 to 80 lbs for three sets of eight repetitions, along with other forms of exercises, such as squats, push-ups, reverse curls, concentration curls, French presses, and both wrist curls and reverse wrist curls--6 to 12 reps (at the time) This method of training targeted his fast and slow twitch muscles

Lee believed that the abdominal muscles were one of the most important muscle groups for a martial artist, since virtually every movement requires some degree of abdominal work. Perhaps more importantly, the "abs" are like a shell, protecting the ribs and vital organs.

He trained from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m., including stomach, flexibility, and running, and from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. he would weight train and cycle. A typical exercise for Lee would be to run a distance of two to six miles in 15 to 45 minutes, in which he would vary speed in 3-5 minute intervals. Lee would then ride his stationary bicycle for 30-45 minutes at full speed immediately after running. Next, Lee would do some skipping rope for 800 jumps non-stop.
