⇒ fallout from Gmail hacking

Gmail was hacked by someones in China this week. Shit hit the fan, yo:
  • ie exploit used

  • micro$h!t issues warning

  • servers behind attack id'd

  • political aftermath

  • germans told to avoid IE

  • great firewall of china

  • google switches security to https

  • in the end Google responded to attacks by uncensoring it's Chinese results, which has long term ramifications for any other business dealing with China. Depending how Google comes away from this, it will set precedent for others. It's like a cyber cold war.

the pearls: So some quick tips on application driven emails:

    • Make the email as useful as possible: Can you get enough into the email so that reading it is enough, and no click is needed?

    • Make your links as specific as possible: If you do need a link, make sure that the one click gets your reader right to where they need to be.

    • Simplify as much as possible: Pull out unnecessary elements from your email. That may mean less design elements, shorter sentences or less copy.

    ⇒ HTML eMAIL

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MHTML
    http://mailformat.dan.info/body/html.html
    http://people.dsv.su.se/~jpalme/ietf/mhtml.html

uses MIME-type encoding. Basically one big security breach waiting to happen. Particulars of MIME HTML here:
    http://people.dsv.su.se/~jpalme/ietf/RFC-MHTMLTEST.txt
    ftp://ftp.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2387.txt
    ftp://ftp.dsv.su.se/users/jpalme/draft-ietf-mhtml-info.txt
    http://people.dsv.su.se/~jpalme/ietf/mhtml-info.html

as of right now, i can't find a decent tutorial or editor for MIME HTML. Do I just drag and drop in MS Entourage/Mac Mail?
